Learning To Speak Spanish Slang
In any language, slang is an informal communication that is often grammatically incorrect. If you are learning to speak Spanish, you should also consider learning to speak Spanish slang. This is especially the case if you are planning to visit Spain or Mexico. You might think you have a good grasp of the language yet end up totally confused because everyone is speaking slang. Therefore, it is recommended you learn at least a little slang before you travel to a Spanish speaking country.
One of the problems with slang is that sometimes it is quite inappropriate in nature. It may be insulting or suggestive. One alternative to slang is the colloquialism. Colloquial speech is similar to slang except more universally accepted and more appropriate. For example, an English colloquialism would be a word like ain't, which means is not. This word is not in the dictionary but many people know what it means. Or something like it's raining cats and dogs. Of course it isn't really raining cats and dogs, that is just a way of saying it is raining hard.
This brings us to idioms, which are expressions that don't mean what they normally would in the dictionary, such as a pretty penny meaning something is expensive. For someone learning a new language, slang, colloquialisms and idioms can be tricky. However it is highly recommended you learn some of these informal words and phrases before you travel to a foreign destination. You will be more likely to understand what is being said around you if you have a rudimentary grasp of these forms of speech. There are many resources that can help you learn more about slang and related types of grammar, especially on the Internet.
When learning to speak Spanish slang you will need to study just as you do when learning to speak regular Spanish. Make flash cards of slang words, colloquial words and idioms. Flash cards are a fast, fun way to learn foreign words. Have a friend or family member quiz you until you know all the words by heart. You might also want to listen to Spanish radio or watch Spanish television programming to get an even better grasp of commonly used informal and formal words and phrases.
